Our Lucky featured Needle Artist for March 2007 is Pat Ziola.
Our congratulations go out to Pat Ziola, March’s Needle Artist of the Month. Pat is a wonderful lady who hails from the Interior of British Columbia. She was born and lived in the Shuswap and told me she doesn’t want to leave her beautiful BC. Her Dad came over from England and her Mom was from Holland and they met on the ship. After getting to know one another, they did the romantic thing and eloped! When Pat was a young girl, her family owned a general store and everyone in the family was involved in helping it run. She remembers learning how to knit with the spools of string from the store when she was about 9 years old, just before the war began. After she learned to knit it was only natural to learn to crochet too. Her mom was instrumental in Pat starting to learn her stitchery. Still, Pat learned the majority of her needlecraft by teaching herself. She did take a course at night school many years ago on smocking and she is learning different stitching techniques from the Creston Valley Embroidery Guild, which she is a member of. Not only does Pat do hand stitching, she is also an exquisite sewer. She sewed her own cloths as a young person and to this day she still sews her clothing. Some of Pat’s other tries with hand embroidery are: bead knitting (check out the two beautiful purses she did), bead crocheting, black work (that was ok), Brazilian embroidery, crazy quilting (on the CV Guild’s banner), enjoys cross stitching, pulled thread work (only on the sampler that she is doing with the guild), likes silk ribbon embroidery and really enjoys tapestry. Currently Pat is busy working on a tapestry (look at the colorful picture of it, not finished yet) and has been helping her daughter make cushions (2 of them) and chair seats (six of these) for her daughter’s dining set. She is also crocheting a wonderful little through full of teddy bears for a grandchild yet to come (there’s another picture, take a look). When I asked Pat what she would like to learn next, she told me Hardanger and Candlewicking. She is planning on joining the Abbotsford Embroidery Guild after she moves (this spring). She enjoys her creative needle art and finds it interesting and challenging. When Pat isn’t busy with her hands she enjoys reading. At the moment it’s non-fiction and she also enjoys the Reader’s Digest. She would like to advise other needle artists to persevere and take your time, especially when you have to take out stitches! Thank you again Pat for your wonderful artwork and we will definitely miss you when you leave. Good luck and have fun in your new home. written by Bonnie McCaull
